it can be challenging to tell if your teen is suffering from anxiety. Their irritability, lethargy, and poor sleep could be attributable to teen hormones. Their stomach aches could be due to their diet. However, these can all be signs of anxiety. Left untreated, anxiety can affect their relationships, their view of themselves, and their school work.
Research suggests that up to 40% of teens in the US experience anxiety - a significant increase from previous years due to the effects of Covid and lockdown.
We suggest you pay attention to your teen's eating and sleeping habits, their moods, and how much or little they are socializing. Maintain an open dialogue with them. You can suggest they might benefit from therapy. We can meet in person in Pasadena or online.
We often see irritability as typical teen attitude. However, irritability and anger can often be signs of depression. Another sign of depression is losing interest in things that used to bring joy. Alternatively, they might seem cheerful most of the time because they're trying to hide their depression from you.
It's important to observe your teen and ask them regularly about their mood and if they are experiencing depressive symptoms.
In our first session we'll take a full history, exploring your teen's early childhood, family dynamics, friendships, recent experiences, and symptoms. We'll also explore their inner world by identifying negative thought patterns and exploring where those thoughts might have originated. And most importantly we'll make sure they know they are not alone, and that we can help.
From here we'll work with them to develop a plan of action to treat their symptoms. Then we'll use CBT, EMDR and other techniques to help them manage, then reduce their symptoms. We can use exposure therapy to help them with social anxiety and set homework to build up their confidence.
